Facial Enhancement Acupuncture (FEA)

I trained in Facial Enhancement Acupuncture and am part of Cosmetic Acupuncture UK . It is an organisation that trains qualified acupuncturists all around the world and is based on TCM principles.

FEA is used to enhance the overall complexion, vibrancy and skin tone of the face . The treatment aims to improve muscle tone and dermal contraction in the face and neck area. A course of treatment can significantly reduce lines and sagging skin with the needles also acting to increase collagen production. The techniques used for this treatment have been used for hundreds of years combined with more recent innovations in acupuncture. The beauty of TCM is the ability to tailor the treatment for each patient; allowing the practitioner to focus on the requirement of the individual. The focus could include:

•  Minimise lines
•  Tightening jowls
•  Reduction in frown and laughter lines
•  Minimising puffiness and bags around the eyes
•  Lift drooping eyelids and brow
•  Improve eye brightness and skin
•  Improve circulation in the skin

The treatment does more than focus on cosmetic improvement, with patients reporting improvements in overall wellbeing too. I am a great believer that if you are happy and healthy on the inside then that is reflected well on the exterior. Therefore an FEA treatment also incorporates some body and ear points to enhance the treatment. With improvement of wellbeing the eyes often brighten and skin gains a glow. Subtle differences are said to be noticed early on in treatment.

Facial Enhancement Acupuncture is sometimes referred to as Facial Rejuvenation or Cosmetic Acupuncture whilst others have labelled it the non-surgical face lift. Treatment works with the body naturally and is a drug and chemical free. The effects can be long lasting with only periodic treatments required after the course of treatment to maintain the results.

Your Appointment – What to expect

A brief case taking and medical history will be taken and contraindications ruled out. The patient will then be asked to lie on the couch and relax whilst ultra-fine small needles are inserted in the face and neck area. Again, these needles are single use, sterile and disposed of immediately after treatment. A numbing cream may be applied to certain areas to help the comfort of treatment. A small number of needles will also be applied to the body and ears to enhance the treatment. Once the needles are removed a gentle facial massage is performed to conclude the treatment.

How many treatments and how often

A course of 10 treatments are advised, one per week. Effects from treatment become more longstanding at around treatment 7 though some report improvements at earlier visits. Each appointment can take 1.5 hours and cost £50.

A discount is offered for a block booking of 10 treatments charged at £450. This is a fraction of the cost of more interventional and surgical procedures.

Acupuncture is safe

As a BAcC and FEA member strict health and safety rules and codes of conduct are complied with as well as local by-laws governing treatment.

The needles used are always sterile, single use and disposed of immediately after treatment. We follow strict clinical waste guidelines enforced by the BAcC and Environmental Health. As BAcC acupuncturists we are trained to a high standard and comply with continued professional development and first aid training.

Side Effects

FEA does not carry any of the risks of disfigurement or swelling that could result from surgical or chemical treatments (procedures such as Botox). However, as with all acupuncture treatments, there is a small risk of bruising. Every effort is made to avoid such an occurrence and the adverse effect is rare. If this does occur it can usually be covered by light make up and recovery is quick. Most recipients of FEA consider this a worthwhile risk for the sake of the treatment outcome.

It is however advised to avoid treatment in the week prior to an event such as wedding or holiday just in case. To have treatment in the build up to such an event is however a good idea and many patients seek treatment in this way.
